Pieters Wins Made in Denmark: But Is Danish Golf Any Good?
Thomas Pieters has won the Made in Denmark title after three successive birdies, helping him secure Ryder Cup selection.
Seeing off Welshman Bradley Dredge by a single shot at Himmerland, the Belgian bagged his third European Tour title in just 12 months.
The performance helped ensure the 24 year old was selected as one of the three Ryder Cup wild cards, revealed by the team's captain Darren Clarke on August 30th.
Lee Westwood and Martin Kaymer were given the other two wild card places by Clarke.
Pieters missed out on automatic Ryder cup selection, but has been playing well in recent weeks – having been placed fourth in the Olympics and having come second in the defence of his Czech Masters title last week.
Explaining his selection of Pieters, Clarke said: "Last week I played with Thomas Pieters and Thomas knew why I was playing with him and played unbelievable and shot 62 and, on top of that, won the tournament."
Himmerland once again hosted the Made in Denmark tournament, but there are many other high quality courses across this diminutive Scandinavian country.
Here are five of the best courses in Denmark for a round of golf – perhaps as part of a bigger holiday in the country, or simply as a golf-focussed getaway.
Scandinavian (Old)
The fairways of this 36-hole course were laid by RTJ2's lead architect Bruce Charlton. True to Scandinavian efficiency, the course was completed on time – opening in the summer of 2010.
Lübker (Sand and Sky)
This acclaimed resort opened in 2008, having been designed by Robert Trent Jones. A sprawling 500-acre estate that took five years to complete.
Esbjerg (Marbæk)
Esbjerg is easy to reach by ferry from Harwich in Essex and is well worth the trip – especially if you love golf. Located on the edge of the Marbæk Forest, this charming course is surrounded by stands of larch, spruce and pine. One of Scandinavia's finest courses.
Scandinavian (New)
You'll be struck by this course's tight layout as soon as you attempt the 1st hole, which plays on to an exceedingly narrow fairway. Similar in design to its older cousin (1st in this list).
Holstebro (Skovbanen)
This challenging course is sure to please, offering delightful surroundings and a stiff challenge.
