Father’s Day ideas for dads who love to travel

Posted on 13 June 2019

Are you wracking your brain trying to think of the best gift for dad this Father's Day? How about eschewing the usual shaving kit and cologne in favour of a minibreak? An overseas trip with dad is sure to reaffirm father-son/daughter relations like nothing else. So if you both have the time, consider the following Father's Day holiday ideas...

Fishing breaks

OK, not all dads are fishing enthusiasts - but a lot are. There are many fishing packages available these days, including deep sea fishing in Portugal - where you might land a shark, marlin or tuna; or fishing on the River Ebro in Spain - where the catfish grow to more than 100kg. You might also consider fly fishing in Slovenia, an increasingly popular destination among fishing lovers who are on a budget: expect beautiful surroundings, great hospitality and lots and lots of fish. Often, fishing doesn't involve much activity - giving you and your dad plenty of time to chew the cud.

Golf breaks

Once again, we're not saying that all dads love golf - but let's face it, many do! Portugal's Algarve is a great choice because it has abundant golf courses, affordable hotels and superb beaches to boot.

Food breaks

We're not saying all dad's love food but...hang on, actually we are. If you want to explore some of the finest food in the world, we reckon you should take your father to Italy, where fresh local ingredients are at the heart of all dishes. Pasta, pizza, seafood - Italian cuisine is best enjoyed in Italy. Consider visiting the stunning island of Sicily, or stay by the tranquil waters of Lake Garda.

History breaks

Is your dad a history buff? Why not take him somewhere steeped in history, like Ephesus in Turkey - Europe's best-preserved Roman city? Or Paphos, the birthplace of Greek goddess Aphrodite - where you can explore the House of Dionysos, the House of Theseus and the 4th century Tombs of the Kings? Or you might choose more recent historic area - such as the World War One battlefields of northern France. Many dads have an interest in a specific historic period - ask yours what his is.

Action breaks

Is your dad the sporty, adventurous type? Then why not hop over to Cape Verde where he can try his hand at windsurfing or driving a buggy across sand dunes? If you want to stay a little closer to home, why not take your dad canyoning in Portugal's Peneda-Geres National Park, where this adrenaline-pumping activity can be enjoyed year-round.
