Tenerife: The Perfect Post-Lockdown Escape?
Tenerife is the largest of the Canary Islands and, in normal times, welcomes five million visitors every year. Most come for the superb beaches and fun-packed resorts, but there are many more reasons to visit these unique Spanish Islands. As the lockdown eases, Tenerife is likely to be one of the hottest destinations (literally and figuratively!) for Brits seeking sunshine and freedom after a tough year.

Things to do in Tenerife
Hire a car and drive through Teide National Park
Mount Teide - at 3,715m the tallest peak in Spain - erupted thousands of years ago, creating Tenerife. The dormant volcano lies at the heart of the island, and is the centrepiece of the Teide National Park. One of the best ways to explore it is by car - as well as spectacular views of Mount Teide, you'll be able to stop off wherever you wish and enjoy the beauty and silence of this other-worldly area.
Hike the lush Western coast
The rugged, desert-like interior of Teide National Park contrasts sharply with the lush green-clad mountain ranges on the west coast of the island, of which Anaga is the finest example. Lace up your hiking boots and enjoy the incredible coastal views. A number of organised hikes are available here (and indeed in Teide National Park).
Cycle from El Medano to Mount Teide
Good roads and fabulous scenery make Tenerife a fantastic place for a cycling holiday. If you're feeling fit enough, why not try the 51km route from El Medano in the south, to the glory of mount Teide? You'll cycle through numerous lovely little towns, including San Isidro, Granadilla and Vilaflor. With a maximum gradient of 11%, it's not for the faint hearted. You can rent a road or mountain bike from about 14 euros, or an e-bike from around 29 euros.
Siam Park theme park
The (kind-of) Thailand-themed Siam Park is a great place to relax for a day - especially if you have kids. Because the pool is heated to a toasty 24 degrees, Siam Park can be enjoyed all year round - even in the depths of winter. Indeed, Tenerife is a popular winter sun destination for Brits, offering year-round sunshine with highs of 20 degrees in January (and just four days of rain!).
Jungle Park
Located near Los Cristianos in the south, Jungle Park is an epic animal park boasting primates, wild cats and crocodiles. It's also beautifully landscaped and is a fantastic place to relax for an afternoon. The park operates several free shuttle buses from key resorts, so you don't need to hire a car to enjoy this park.
Loro Parque
Last but not least is Loro Park - ranked on Tripadvisor as the second best zoo on the planet. What makes it so special? The sheer variety of animals on show - and the excellent care they receive. It was originally conceived as a paradise for parrots, so you'll see plenty of these glorious winged beasts (4,000+ in fact), plus chimpanzees, sea lions and orcas!
