Keeping Your Cash Safe in Greece This Summer
Over the last few weeks, it has been difficult to avoid the news stories about the Greek economy. As several Greek banks have closed and others are applying restrictions on cash withdrawals, people travelling to Greece may be unable to access their funds whilst they are away. Many travellers will be carrying more cash with them than they might do normally during their holidays. We therefore suggest the following tips on security and keeping your money safe whilst you are away.
- Even if the banks in Greece re-open, be prepared for them to shut again at short notice. It is best to bring enough cash to cover your whole holiday either way. Regardless of the changes, restaurants and cafes may still insist on you paying with cash.
- Store your money and valuables in a safe in your hotel. Sometimes they are free of charge, but if you have to pay extra it might be worth parting with the cash to ensure your holiday funds are safe whilst you are out and about.
- Don't keep all your cash in one place when you are away from your hotel - split it up between your group so that if one set is stolen or lost, you still have back up.
- When you are out and about, keep your cash in securely fastened pockets and be especially vigilant in busy places. Make it as difficult as possible for potential pick-pockets to get their hands on your cash and valuables. Thieves use many techniques, including distraction methods, so keep your wits about you at all times.
- Never leave your cash or valuables unattended, even around the pool at your hotel. You never know who is watching.
- Fully plan your holiday and take into consideration any extra costs or excursions. Work out roughly how much money you will need for each day and it may be best to over-compensate to make sure that you don't run out. If you have some left over after your holiday, the Euro exchange rate is very good at the moment so why not save them for your next trip?
- If worst comes to worst and your cash is stolen, be sure to notify the police and obtain a police report within 48 hours so that you may be considered to claim the costs back under your travel insurance when you return home.
- Familiarise yourself with your travel insurance policy wording terms regarding lost or stolen personal effects, possessions and cash to ensure that you are taking reasonable care to make sure that your claim may be considered in the event of theft.
