Golfing in Thailand? Here Are 5 Courses You Shouldn’t Miss!

Posted on Tuesday, 22 July 2014

Thailand has long been a favourite holiday and retirement spot for people across the globe, including many from the UK. Beautiful beaches, hot weather, friendly locals and low living costs make it hard to beat – and even with the current political turmoil, it continues to attract high visitor numbers.

But is Thailand any good if you love golf?

The simple answer is YES. Here are starttravel.co.uk's top 5 suggestions for some truly sublime golf in the Kingdom of Thailand.

  1. Banyan, Hua Hin

Opened in 2008, Banyan is certainly a young course. But despite its youth, it offers everything you could wish for in a golfing venue.

This undulating hillside course is proud of its tropical surroundings, with charming bougainvillea beds, pineapple patches and of course, pretty banyan trees.

The views are arguably so beautiful they might put you off your stroke, especially if you go for an evening game when the sun sets dramatically over the distant Burmese mountains.

The course delivers between 5087 - 7361 yards, depending on which of the four tee sets you select. After the day's action is done, head for Mulligan's, the course's inviting 'Hole 19' for a Chang beer or two.

  1. Santiburi Samui Country Club, Koh Samui

Whether or not you're attracted by the buzzing night life of Koh Samui, up in Santiburi Samui Country Club all you'll find are stunning tropical vistas and some truly great golf.

Host to the 2006 Bangkok Airways Open, Santiburi has grown in stature over recent years – and rightly so. Wherever you are on the 18 hole course, you'll be able to enjoy views of the island's beaches and jungle, as well as the nearby party island of Ko Phangan.

And despite the course's quality, it's very cheap. The compulsory golf cart costs around £15, while a golf set costs £14-£30 to rent. You can also stay here overnight and enjoy the club's excellent spa facilities.

  1. Chiangmai Highlands Golf and Spa Resort

If you're not a big fan of Thailand's heat, then Chiangmai Highlands Golf and Spa Resort, located deep in the country's northern jungle, could be perfect.

But it offers a great deal more than simply a place to play some breezy golf high above sea level. The course designers decided to let the natural undulation of the land dictate the holes, making for a very organic feel.

And even if your ball ends up in the pond on the last hole (a common occurrence), you can console yourself with a massage and spa experience, or even a stay in one of the wonderfully appointed bungalows near the course. The five-star cuisine will also lift you from a bad golf mood, which in a resort as delightful as this, is not likely – however badly you play!

  1. Burapha Golf Club, Pattaya

Visitors to Burapha Golf Club are generally either looking for some respite from the hedonism of the nearby beach resort of Pattaya, or simply come here for some relaxing golf. Neither such visitors are likely to be disappointed.

There are two main courses – the East course and the West course, with the former more suitable for intermediate levels and the latter perfect for more seasoned golfers.

Once again, the beauty of Thailand's lush green countryside, together with views of bustling Pattaya and the glittering sea beyond, make this a very special place to work on your handicap.

And if you're travelling with people who are less keen on golf, you can pack them off to the spa, the swimming pool or the tennis courts.

  1. Nichigo Golf Resort & Country Club, Kanchanaburi

If you're visiting Kanchanaburi to discover more about the Death Railway (of Bridge Over the River Kwai/Railway Man fame) and you fancy a spot of golf, look no further than exotic Nichigo.

Set along the gracious Kwai Yai River around half an hour from Kanchanaburi, the course offers wonderful mountain vistas and beautifully cultivated tropical gardens.

The course's 27 holes are spread over Lake, River and Mountain courses, constituting the best golf in Kanchanaburi.

Don't miss the replica River Kwai bridge, situated between holes 5 and 6 - bring your camera!

Political situation

While political problems persist in Thailand, tourists are highly valued by the authorities and indeed the whole nation. But it always pays to understand any political issues when you visit a country.
