The Best Coastal Resorts on Mainland Greece
Mainland Greek resorts are often just as beautiful as those on the islands, but are usually cheaper - and certainly easier to reach.
The mention of Greece conjures up images of sun-kissed islands blessed with castor sugar beaches lapped by gas-blue seas.
But mainland Greece has some equally stunning coastal resorts to choose from - and these are often cheaper than the islands (unless you're staying near Athens), and more straightforward to get to.
Indeed, mainland Greece boasts many incredible historical sites and stunning natural vistas - including innumerable jaw-dropping beaches.
This article features seven of the best coastal resorts on mainland Greece... worth a read if you are still deciding where to stay in Greece.
Parga
Parga is popular with all demographics - including couples, groups, solo travellers and families. It boasts an array of restaurants, bars and shops - and of course hotels for every need and budget.
It's also just across the water from fabulous Corfu - ideal if you fancy a taste of Greek island life.
Among the many top-class beaches around Parga, Alonaki is one of the more peaceful and secluded.
25 km from Parga, Alonaki is located in a cove that offers protection from the sea breeze, golden sands, and the fragrance of pine trees from the woods behind.
You're best off hiring a car to reach this beach, and others like it in the area.
Kavala
From the Archaeological Site of Philippi to the mediaeval fortress that dominates the Panagia peninsula, there are plenty of jaw-dropping historical sites to enjoy in and around Kavala.
But the area's biggest draw is its beaches - lapped by crystalline waters.
Among the many gorgeous stretches of sand nearby, Ammolofoi is one of the finest - and is perfect for families. Kids are sure to love the vast sand dunes, while the clear, calm waters are just the ticket for safe swimming.
Ammolofoi is just outside Kavala and has plenty of parking. It also has lots of bars, restaurants - and sunbeds!
Halkidiki
Among the many coastal beauty spots near Halkidiki is Karidi Beach. It's one of the most Instagrammable stretches of sand on mainland Greece. The downside is that because it's so well known, it can get rather busy. However, that doesn't stop it from being gob-smackingly gorgeous!
But Halkidiki isn’t all about beaches. This most famous of Greek holiday resorts boasts three stunning peninsula harbours, peaceful monasteries on Mount Athos, and many bicycle-friendly roads - especially around the coastal beauty spots of Sithonia and Kassandra.
Chorefto, Pelion
Located near Pelion - famous for the mountain of the same name - Chorefto is a small resort with a vast 2 km long beach.
There are plenty of places to eat and drink, and children will love the soft golden sand and clean water.
Chorefto is just 8 km away from Zagora, a traditional mountain village that offers a rewarding day out.
And let’s not forget nearby Mount Pelion - a popular destination for hikers and weekend mountain climbers.
Chorefto features a good range of hotels and villas to stay in.
Kalamaki, Laganas Bay (Athens)
Kalamaki is one of many sprawling beach resorts near Athens that were, until a few decades ago, sleepy coastal villages. But as the Greek capital has expanded, so too has the popularity of its stunning coastal locales.
The resort's shallow seabed makes it an excellent choice if you're holidaying with young children. These waters also make an ideal natural habitat for the endangered Caretta-Caretta sea turtle - so keep an eye out!
Kalamaki has all the amenities you’d expect from a big seaside resort, but still feels a lot quieter and more laidback than busier nearby alternatives such as cosmopolitan Lagana.
Note: don't confuse the Athenian Kalamaki with others of the same name (there are several across Greece!).
It's arguably one of the best places to stay in Greece if you want to fuse city thrills with beachside relaxation.
Glyfada (Athens)
Glyfada is the Greek capital's largest and most well-heeled suburb. It's also home to amazing Glyfada Beach, a long sandy stretch interrupted only by the occasional yacht-packed marina or traditional fishing village (where the daily catch is still brought in by colourful boats).
The beach surface ranges from pebbles to fine sand. The coastal shelving here makes for shallow, safe waters - perfect for those travelling with youngsters.
Glyfada is also home to some of the best Athens beach hotels, including the elegantly minimalistic Brasil Suites Boutique Hotel, and the centrally-located Athens Coast Hotel - which has rooms for a range of budgets.
Food-wise, you're spoilt for choice, with many top-rated cafes and restaurants in the town's square - and plenty of designer outlets serving both prosperous locals and overseas visitors that like to spend!
Certainly one of the top resorts in Athens.
Sivota
Laid-back Sivota is a smart choice for couples seeking some tranquillity in a pretty coastal location.
One of the finest beaches is Bella Vraka in Thesprotia - an ideal spot to lounge on a sunbed with a good novel.
The beach features numerous small coves which are perfect for some seclusion - but the main section of beach is close at hand when you feel the need to socialise.
Just off the coast are the small islands of Mavro Oros, Agios Nikolaos, and Mourtemeno, alongside a number of islets.
There's also a great choice of affordable villas and hotels to stay in nearby.
