7 Destinations for a Quiet, Peaceful Holiday

Posted on Tuesday, 23 April 2019

It's easy to forget the benefits of peace and quiet - for the mind, body and soul. This year, why not relax in a place with fewer people and more tranquility? Consider one of these locations - turn off your phone and let your troubles drift away on the silent breeze...

Lanzarote, Canary Islands

This most northerly of the Canary islands may not immediately spring to mind when you think of tranquil holidays, but it is in fact home to some truly peaceful - and beautiful - places. Hidden among the sprawling resorts and between the volcanoes are numerous remote cottages, often built from dark volcanic rock. Many of these are located near fishing villages, where fresh seafood is always available.

Ithaca, Greece

This history-steeped Greek island offers an incredibly slow pace of life. The locals are assured of their prosperity, surrounded as they are by fertile land and stunning beaches. Many villas feature beautifully-tended gardens, self-service kitchens - and cookery classes. Other establishments also boast massage and spa services, alongside a pool - if you can't quite drag yourself down to the soft sandy beach and the gentle lapping waves...

Lapland, Sweden

It doesn't have to be winter for you to enjoy Lapland - but it helps. Why not head to the Swedish part of Lapland and Laponia World Heritage Area, where you can enjoy a stay in a luxurious (and sustainable) lavvu tent, complete with stoves and comfortable furnishings. There's no electricity - giving you a chance to get back to nature. Some campsites also give you the chance to witness traditional reindeer herding.

Cirali Beach, Turkey

The stunning Cirali beach is well-loved for its little wooden chalets, scattered as they are among pretty gardens that edge the soft golden sand and the lapping waves beyond. Your accommodation is bereft of TVs and features low-key lighting - designs intended to leave the local turtle population undisturbed. One of Turkey's best-kept secrets.

The Silent Cafes of Japan

While you might not manage to build an entire holiday around them, Japan's silent cafes are undeniably fascinating. Visitors sit quietly and contemplate existence over a pot of green tea, communicating only by notepad - should the need arise. Popular with Japan's younger generation, you'll find many silent cafes in Tokyo - although the trend is spreading to more rural locations.

Seychelles

Only 30 of the Seychelles' 115 islands are inhabited, making it easy to find a quiet beachside retreat. Expect thatched huts and colonial-era villas, as well as fresh, local produce. A dip in the crystal blue sea reveals an ecosystem teeming with life: seabirds, colourful fish, turtles and more. The Seychelles' remote Indian Ocean location means it will probably never be overrun with tourists.

Faroe Islands

Marooned in the North Atlantic halfway between Scotland and Iceland, the Faroe Islands is the ultimate remote holiday location. This dramatic, windswept collection of 18 islands is home to mountains, cliffs and waterfalls. Choose a turf-roofed bed and breakfast and enjoy a long hike in this most wild of locations - letting your troubles float away on the cool winds...
