Lanzarote, Canary Islands
This most northerly of the Canary islands may not immediately spring to mind when you think of tranquil holidays, but it is in fact home to some truly peaceful - and beautiful - places. Hidden among the sprawling resorts and between the volcanoes are numerous remote cottages, often built from dark volcanic rock. Many of these are located near fishing villages, where fresh seafood is always available.
Ithaca, Greece
This history-steeped Greek island offers an incredibly slow pace of life. The locals are assured of their prosperity, surrounded as they are by fertile land and stunning beaches.
