5 World Class Surfing Holiday Hot Spots

Posted on Wednesday, 6 August 2014

Britain offers surfers some great waves – such as those found off the beautiful Devon or Cornish coasts, or the idyllic West Coast of Scotland.

But as wonderful as these places are, they can get rather chilly.

So if you're looking for a sunnier setting to get your surfing fix – or even to learn it for the first time – where might you go? Here are our top 5 surfing destination recommendations.

California, USA

The Pacific Coast Highway has featured in many Hollywood films, but aside from its cinematic allure, it also gives surfers great access to California's stunning beaches. There are scores of fantastic surfer hot spots along this coast, whether you're a beginner seeking a buzzing beach such as Manhattan or Malibu, or whether you need your waves more challenging – such as those off San Francisco's Mavericks Beach.

California offers great surf all year round, with plenty of moderate 2-4 foot waves for beginners.

Gold Coast & West Coast, Australia

While Australia has a number of world-class surfing spots, the Gold Coast is arguably the best – certainly if you're looking for great night life to boot. But the waves really only last from April to October. For year-round action, head over to the West Coast.

Australia is a long way to go for a surf, but you won't be disappointed.

And with so many beaches, it's no wonder that the country caters to surfers of all levels.

Bali, Indonesia

Surfers from the West arrived in Bali around 25 years ago (and some still haven't left!) It remains a very popular place for the sport and for the surrounding culture. Various nationalities come here and combine wave catching and temple-hopping – with a sensible (or not so sensible) amount of nightlife thrown in. March heralds the start of the southeast trade winds, which continue until November. Hollow tube waves are not uncommon – but these are of course only for the highly experienced.

That said, surfing conditions here cater to all skill and experience levels.

West Coast of France

Much of France's western side offers good surf, but it tends to get better the further south you go. Head to Biarritz or Hessegor for the very finest waves – but be warned, what you saved on avoiding a long haul flight to somewhere more exotic may be cancelled out by costly food and accommodation in La République. Countries like France make a campervan seem like a wise investment.

Come to France between March and November for the best surf – and avoid freezing to death!

Portugal

Staying close to home, Portugal too offers great surfing – and won't break the bank as much as a trip to France. The north in particular is fantastic if you want un-crowded, serene beaches. However, the surf cannot usually be described as serene, offering waves of all heights – year round.

However, only professionals should attempt winter time surfing (November to February). Beginners should aim for April to August; they'll enjoy some fabulous beach life to boot.

Hitting the Waves this Year?

Surfing is a truly exciting sport – but it does come with a certain amount of risk. Eye damage, head trauma and lacerations are among the most common surf injuries – and can be expensive to treat whilst overseas. The average medical travel insurance claim in the UK is more than £900, but if you suffer a very serious injury, this could be much more – especially if you need to be repatriated.

So make sure you're covered before you set out – wherever you're going.
