Luxury hotel stays are big business these days, with some regular package holiday firms even developing their own high-end accommodation - such as Thomas Cook's Casa Cook in Crete, (see below). We've picked 10 of our favourite hotels due to open this year. Some are located in well-loved cities and resorts, while others are located in lesser known, wilder spots. Experimental Menorca & Venice
If you've visited the rather hip Experimental Cocktail Clubs in London, Paris or New York, you'll doubtless be excited by these two new hotels, which are styled and owned by the very same ultra-cool French guys. Later this year the group of four are opening a sprawling seaside hotel in Menorca and a canalside palazzo in Venice. We think cocktails might be involved.

Baglioni Resort Maldives, Maagu, The Maldives
Baglioni Hotels & Resorts open their very first hotel on the ravishing Maldives, famed for its superb dive spots and soft sandy beaches. Featuring 96 super-luxury villas set among the lush jungle of Maggau, the Italian-owned and styled hotel will open in April 2019.

Hoxton Chicago
Hoxton, the successful London hotel brand, is opening a 175-room establishment in the Windy City this spring. Alongside a rooftop pool, it will boast a restaurant managed by Boka Restaurant Group - a well-established favourite among Chicagoans.

Calilo, Ios, Greece
This new five-star resort has some stiff competition on Ios, but the omens look good: Set among 1,000 acres, the hotel features a private beach, bars and restaurants. Each of the 30 suites has a private pool and Jacuzzi. Days can be spent hiking, seakayaking, or relaxing in the vast 500-tree olive grove.
JK Hotel, Paris
Set in the heart of the French capital, just a stone's throw from the Musée d'Orsay on the Left Bank, JK Hotel is owned by Ori Kafri - best known for his JK Place in Florence. Like that Italian hotel, this Parisian one has been designed by Florentine Michele Bonan. The new establishment will be typified by chic, heavy fabrics, Parisian antiques and art commissioned by local designers.

Grand Park Hotel Rovinj, Croatia
With views of Rovinj's old town and the Adriatic Sea, Grand Park Hotel Rovinj is ideal for a weekend of luxury. In the hotel's vast spa you'll find three indoor and outdoor pools, three Finnish saunas and a peaceful garden. It opens in April, just in time for summer season.

Can Bordoy Grand House & Garden
This lavish 24-room retreat is located in Palma's evocative Old Quarter - and it's already open! Expect an intriguing mixture of modern and traditional styles, with wooden beams, contemporary art and antique frescoes. It also boasts a heated swimming pool and a lush secret garden complete with indigenous trees. Enjoy traditional Mallorcan dishes at the al fresco dining spot Botanic.
Mari Mari Natural Reserve
There are only six ocean front villas in this resort - but they sure are special. Located by a ravishing deserted beach in remotest Chilean Patagonia, you can fill your days with hiking and horseback riding and your nights with moonlit swims. Mari Mari opened in January.

Casa Cook Chania, Crete
Thomas Cook hotels are not known for their uniqueness, but Casa Cook Chania is different. Enlisting Berlin-based designers Lambs and Lions, the travel giant has created a chic hotel replete with mid-century modern style and earthy-toned minimalism. Superstar-elegant it may be, but it's also family-centric, with a rather fun treehouse-inspired clubhouse for the kids.
Blackberry Mountain, Tennessee
This rustic-hip establishment is all about outdoor adventures and wellness activities, set as it is in 5,200 acres of protected land. Choose a cabin, cottage or private home, then try sound bathing or aerial yoga, or something less offbeat such as fly fishing or mountain biking.
