Kaunas – The Heart of Lithuania

Posted on Thursday, 27 March 2014

Sometimes, if you spend too much time in one place, you no longer notice the beauty and magic of your surroundings. It took me a few years away from Lithuania to realise how amazing it is. I cannot imagine a better place to be at when searching for myself. It is my happy place where I can rest, recharge myself with energy and fill my soul with happiness.

Lithuania is a small country located in Eastern Europe along the south-eastern shore of the Baltic Sea. Is a lowland country, but the lack of mountains on the horizon is compensated by forests and countless lakes. The magnificent amount of untouched nature in Lithuania is one of the things that are so sacred and incredibly valuable to Lithuanian people.I, myself, come from the second largest city in the country – Kaunas. I describe it as small, but full of character. Like many other cities in Lithuania, Kaunas, is a beautiful mixture of parks, rivers, newly built and old buildings. My favourite part of the city is Kaunas old town. Full of historic buildings, art galleries, tiny cafes and boutiques, Kaunas old town is decorated with flowery balconies, cute wooden benches and elegant lampposts.

There is nothing better than a summery afternoon in a small old town cafe, a delicious bowl of salad, glass of wine and a view of passing people. My ears catch a romantic melody of an accordion playing somewhere in a small street nearby and it does feel like time stops there and then, there's just me and my love to this city, which is bigger than ever.

Step out to the one side of the town centre and you will find restaurants, bars and a fountain marking the centre of a gorgeous alley of trees called “The Freedom Alley”. This is the place where for years and years couples have met for their dates. The end of the alley brings you to St. Michael the Archangel Church, a very old and very beautiful building, an unforgettable symbol of Kaunas city.I believe that it is truly impossible not to be inspired in Kaunas. I love spending an afternoon in the city centre or walking around parks, passing beautiful bridges and enjoying the evening sun kissing the city goodnight while watching the cityscape. That is pretty much all I need to call it a perfect day.

No matter where in the world I am, Kaunas will always live in my heart and my heart will always live in Kaunas.
