Partying

Albufeira, Algarve

Serenity

But for many couples, it's the serenity of the Algarve that really leaves a lasting impression. Few things are more life-affirming and contenting than a day spent on a golden sandy beach, followed by a meal in a cosy, simple seafood eatery, concluded with a return to the coast to see the sun slip behind the glittering Mediterranean. Such an experience can only be bettered by sampling a glass of locally-made wine on your hotel balcony, before slipping between cool white linen with your other half.

A romantic road trip along the coast

Aljezur

The perfect town to begin a road trip, Aljezur on the northwest coast is near a protected nature area called Parque Natural do Sudoeste Alentejano e Costa Vicentina. Punctuating the wild landscape are ancient Moorish ruins and charming churches.

That said, there is a vibrant surfer fraternity here, but you'll nevertheless find plenty of space to experience the idyllic beaches nearby.

Lagos

More popular with the tourists is Lagos - and with good reason. Dramatic cliffsides and a bustling fish market are the main draws, alongside the soft sandy beaches and the lively night-life. But whether you want peace and quiet or a night on the tiles, Lagos offers both.

Things to be aware of

Take care on the roads - there appears to be a rally driver in every Portuguese person!

Beware smokers - smoking is still very popular among the Portuguese, so be ready for it and remember that nicotine consumption is much more tolerated here than in the UK. Some restaurants have smoking areas.

Time-keeping issues - the Portuguese are a very relaxed nationality, so don't get flustered by slow waiting staff or otherwise steady service. And if a Portuguese invites you for dinner at their home at 7pm, they probably don't expect you to turn up before 8pm - or to leave before midnight!
