8 amazing new cruise ship activities

Cruise ships now offer far more than just fine dining, live music and sea views. The latest crop of super-liners now present a myriad of activities and attractions that guarantee a fun-packed voyage.

Here are eight of the most unusual...

Racetrack on Norwegian Bliss

Cruise travel is a slow affair - but not if you book a cabin on-board Norwegian Bliss, which features a race track complete with hairpin bends - where you can reach speeds of 30mph. The two-level track is open air and covers 1000 feet.

Submarine on Crystal Cruises

With enough space for a pilot and two passengers, Crystal Cruises' submarine can dive to nearly 1000 feet, and features a 360-degree acrylic capsule from which you can glimpse shipwrecks and coral in the deep blue.

Robot bartenders on Royal Caribbean International

On several Royal Caribbean ships you can visit the Bionic Bar, whose main draw is a robotic bar person. Order your drinks via a tablet then behold the bartender's two robotic arms as they swing around and prepare your chosen imbibe. Sadly, the robot cannot yet listen to your romantic troubles.

Underwater lounge on Ponant

Ponant's new Explorer class ships will feature a lounge dubbed Blue Eye, from which you can peer through two large portholes and enjoy the surrounding aquatic life.

Bike ride in the air on Carnival Cruise Line

On-board Carnival's Vista and Horizon you can experience the SkyRide aerial attraction, which features an 800-foot suspended outdoor track above the liner's top deck. The four dangling bicycles can top speeds of 18mph.

Ice Bar on Norwegian Cruise Line

On-board three of Norwegian's cruise liners you can visit the Skyy Vodka Ice Bar, featuring a frozen bar and impressive ice sculptures. Warm coats are provided free of charge, but it costs $20 to enter - a fee which doesn't include drinks.

Skydiving simulator on Royal Caribbean International

Royal Caribbean's Quantum-class ships now offer a skydiving attraction called RipCord by iFLY - which is basically a 23-foot high wind tunnel.

Snow Grotto on Viking

This line is drawing on its Scandinavian roots with the Snow Grotto - a circulation-boosting room pumped with cold air and filled with falling snowflakes. If it all gets too chilly, you can pop next door for a super-hot stint in the sauna.
